In the Facebook tile groups, these types of questions come up on a regular basis:
- “Hey, how are you guys generating leads?”
- “Does anyone else run ads on ?”
- “Is it worth it to pay Yapi’s List for leads every month?”
And every time, in the comments, you’ll find the guy who just can’t wait to type:
‘My business is 100% referral! My work is so awesome that I don’t have to buy leads!’
His ego is so proud to grace the group with this completely unhelpful comment.
Referrals aren’t a Marketing Plan
Construction business guru Michael Stone, who wrote, Markup & Profit Revisited, has this to say:
“Referrals are great but when the economy heads south, referrals tend to dry up”
He further mentions that many of these referral-only businesses go belly-up when the economy turns down.
The Marketing Plan You Need
Stone says you need a 2-pronged approach:
- Know who your ideal client is and attract them
- Work in the Geographic area that you want
The skill of being able to generate leads when you need them is essential for every business owner to know.
Having this skill puts you in control so when the economy turns down you can keep your business afloat and maybe even thriving!
