After reading this headline, I know what you are thinking.
The Brit’s must have finally discovered at least one of the following:
- Coffee is better than tea
- The American dialect is the highest form of English
- Forcing the tax payers to support a non-governing royal family is truly ridiculous
Well, no, the British are still slow coming around to those discoveries. However, what is remarkable is that this latest game-changing discovery is… tile-related.
Homer’s Iliad
Hiding below a farmer’s field lies this 1700-year-old Roman mosaic depicting the ancient Greek poet Homer’s even more ancient story called Iliad [pronounced ill-E-ad].
Iliad is about a Greek war with the Trojans. This particular scene is depicting the two top warriors going at it: Achilles for the Greeks and Hector for team Troy.
Sort of like Michael Jordan vs Reggie Miller in the 1998 Eastern Conference finals.
Up until this point, Achilles had been sitting the fight out because he was sulking about one of his mates stealing his girl.
Conclusion
It’s thought that this 31 ft. x 21 ft. mosaic was once the floor of a dining room in a Roman villa.
Further, this dig will be featured on the BBC television show Digging for Britain in 2022.
Needless to say, this whole thing puts a damper on growing crops for the time being.
