Clean cut isn’t always the right choice
Collared shirt: Check. Short hair: Check. Smelling like Old Spice: Check.
Many contractors feel the way to winning jobs is to be clean-cut, dress up, and drive a nice vehicle.
However, does showing up looking like you’re straight from the golf course mean that you will close more prospects?
What do your customers want you to look like?
Shouldn’t we look like our customers expect us to look?
For example, if you are presenting yourself as a mosaic artist shouldn’t you look like a real artist? This would include:
- long hair
- dress at least a little bit weird
- be prone to severe mood swings
After all, if you show up clean and ordinary looking then your potential customers might think you lack imagination.
It’s not about YOU!
In this article, the author Kenneth Faulk outlines reasons that it makes sense to dress down for your clients.
These include:
Connecting with your customer
Some clients may be distrustful of the “corportate-y” types and want someone they can relate to.
Standing out from your competition
How do you make an impression? It’s definitely not by looking and doing what everyone else does.
Furthermore, dressing down doesn’t mean that you have to be smelly and disgusting. You just have to make a positive impression on the prospect.
Bottom line
Remember, it’s not about what YOU think that you should look like but rather what is going to close the customer.
More than likely, that will be showing up looking clean and presentable.
